Historical
Perspective
The College Founder Chairman Sri Nanalal Bhatt chartered his course of action,
towards creating this edifice of learning - rightly a women's college,
endorsing the statement of Napoleon -Give us good mothers, I will give you a
good nation". It was his untiring efforts and philanthropy, the co-operation of
well wishers who lent their support for this noble cause, which took the shape
of this women's college, catering to the needs of the lower and middle - income
group families-especially from Chengelpet District. The college was officially
inaugurated on 19th Sept. 1968 by His Excellence - the then Governor of Tamil
Nadu - Sardar Ujjal Singh. On the College Day on 14th March 1972 the then
Minister for Education of Tamil Nadu Dr.V.R. Nedunchezian - commended the noble
example of our college management in setting up the college in Chromepet -
providing opportunities for Higher Education particularly to women in this area
who so far had been denied this privilege.
The college was started in 1968 with the munificient donation of 10 acres of
land by our Late Founder Chairman Sri Nanalal Bhatt and Rs.6 lakhs donated by
Cork Industries Charities Trust. The college stands in the name of our Late
Founder Chariman's beloved wife Shrimathi Devkunvar. The college spans over an
area of 10 acres and the college campus is as wide as the founder's vision and
as beautiful as his idea.
The initial strength of students was 240 in 3 P.U.C Sections with a staff –
strength of 20. There were 3 well - equipped science labs on the ground floor
with 3 lecture halls on the first floor. In 1970 the college was upgraded with
the introduction of B.A.Economics and three more batches in P.U.C.The College
has efficiently rendered three decades of dedicated service to women students
of this district, under the able guidance of Mrs. Sarojini Natarajan
(1968-1972), the first principal, succeeded by Miss Saroja Swaminathan
(September 1972-November 1973), Dr.(Mrs.) D.Thangam Seshan (November
1973-1997), Miss T.V.Jayalakshmi (1997-2002) and presently Dr. (Mrs.) T.Sumitra
(from June 2002 onwards).
There are 10 courses being offered at the graduate level: B.Com, 3 in
humanities and 6 in sciences at present aided in the regular stream.Unaided College
was started in the year 1984-85. PG courses introduced in the self-financing
structure in 2001 were an added attraction to the already existing courses at
the U G level. The “A” Grade Accreditation by NAAC in 2003 was a feather in
the cap to the committed efforts of the college as a whole. The crowning glory
is the autonomous status conferred by UGC and confirmed by University of Madras
in June 2006. We have 10 U.G. Courses in the Aided and 8 U.G. courses and 6 P.G.
courses in the unaided structure. Skill based certificates courses like Logistics
Management, Retail management, E-publishing, Cosmetology and Apparel designing
have been introduced for II year students and all first year (both UG and PG)
students are learning a Communicative English skill based certificate programme.
The college is also an extension centre for I.C.W.A. Course.
The approximate strength for every batch is around 25.
We have entered the III Year of autonomy. The Board of Studies designs and develops
career oriented and socially productive curriculum, with enriched contents, which is
approved by the Academic Council and Governing Body of our college. It also equips
the students with value added skills like communicative soft skills, health and
fitness and advanced interview technique skills.
To cope with the present day market trend, the institution is taking all
positive steps to provide a strong platform for our students to face the
current challenges. From 2002-2003 onwards the college has implemented
E-Governance, which has effectively been introduced in all sections of the
college (Academic and Administrative System).Apart from this, under the E-edu
Govern project the institution is offering computer literacy to all the
students besides their regular class schedule. The present student strength is
1482 in the Aided College and 1496 in the Unaided College. The total staff
strength is 151, 72 in the Aided College and 79 in the Unaided College. The
strength of Non-Teaching staff is 55.
