The following scholarships are awarded by the Central and
State Government and Private Endowments.
-
Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe scholarships from Harijan Welfare
Departments.
-
Backward and Most Backward Classes scholarships from the Director of Backward
Classes.
1. National Scholarships Scheme:
Eligibility:
Only those candidates who are
Indian Citizens, and who obtain atleast 60 percent of marks in the aggregate in
School Leaving Examination, namely, Matriculation / Higher Secondary / High
School / Indian School Certificates are eligible for selection. The income of
the parents of scholars should not exceed Rs. 25,000/- per annum. Merit
certificates and National prize of Rs. 100 will be issued to the scholars whose
parent’s income exceeds Rs.25,000/- per annum. The scholarships is renewable
from year to year within the same stage of education provided the candidates
secure 50% of marks in aggregate.
Rate of Scholarship :
I year Degree Course : Day Scholar - Rs.60/-
II & III year Degree Course : Day Scholar - Rs.90/-
2. State Scholarships for the Children of School Teachers:
Eligibility:
Only Indian Nationals are
eligible under the scheme. The scholarships are open to children of all
teachers working in recognised schools. Only those students who passed the exam
from Tamil Nadu S.S.L.C / Matric or Equivalent exam, Higher Secondary Exam,
Indian School Certificate Examination securing at least 60 percentage of marks
in the aggregate. Parent’s income does not exceed Rs.1000/- a merit certificate
and National prize of Rs.100/- will be issued. Full time course students only
are eligible.
Value of the Scholarships :
I year Degree Course : Day Scholar Rs.60/-
II & III year Degree Course : Day Scholar Rs.90/-
The
Scholarship once awarded under the scheme will be continued and renewed year
after year subject to good conduct and regular attendance. The notification
regarding the award of scholarship is published in all leading dailies. Only
the selected candidates will be requested to submit their income affidavit,
Employment certificate, joining Report etc.
3. State Government Merit Scholarship Scheme ::
The State Merit Scholarship is tenable for 10 months in a year from post matric
stage upto postgraduate stage of education. The value of scholarship is as
follows ;
I year Degree Course : Day Scholar - Rs.50/-
II & III year Degree Course : Day Scholar - Rs.75/-
Only eligible candidates are intimated of their selection by
the Director of Collegiate Education, Chennai– 600 008.
4. Educational Concession and Scholarships to the Children of Repatriates From
Srilanka:
5. Scheme of Scholarship to Students from Non-Hindi Speaking States for Post-
Matric Students Studying Hindi :
Eligibility :
Only
those students whose mother tongue is not Hindi and who belong to any of the
following States will be eligible for scholarship. The candidate who is in
receipt of any other scholarship including National Loan will not be entitled
to this scholarship under this scheme.
Rate of Scholarship:
I year Degree Course : Day Scholar - Rs. 50/- per month
II & III year Degree Course : Day Scholar - Rs. 75/- per month
Only those candidates will be eligible who have passed the Tenth examination’
with Hindi as one of the subjects or have passed another examination in Hindi
recognised by the Government of India.
6.Educational Concessions:
Children of Freedom fighters:
The
Educational Concessions are awarded to this above said children provided the
income of the freedom fighter does not exceed Rs.500/- per month.
Non-Residential Scholarship :
I year Course : Rs. 125/- per month
II year Course : Rs. 50/- per month
III year Course : Rs. 40/- per month
Children or dependent of Defence Service Personnnel :
Exemption from payment of Tuition fees and all items of special fees in all
grades of Educational Institutions to the children of serving personnel of
Defence service belonging to the category of Junior Commissioned Officers
including similar ranks in the Navy and Air Force.
Eligibility :
Such
of the children who have obtained II class or 50 percentage of marks in the
aggregate in the previous annual examination are alone eligible for the award.
Candidates have to apply every year afresh as there is no question of renewals.
Value of Scholarship :
Degree Courses – Tuition fees and all items of special fees
exempted.
Book allowances Rs.215/- for the entire course.
7.National Loan :
Eligibility :
The
National Loan scholarships are open to Nationals of India only. Students who
pass any of the qualifying examinations with at least 50 per cent marks in
aggregate will be eligible for the award and renewal of National Loan
scholarship. The income of the parents of scholars should not exceed
Rs.12,000/- in a year. This scholar should be in regular full time course of
any of the day time institutions.
Value of Scholarship :
Degree Course : Rs.720/- per annum
Selection
8.Under the Administration of the Director of Collegiate Education:
State Collegiate Scholarship :
The
State Scholarships will be awarded to courses only for education after the
matriculation/ or higher secondary to all recognised full time College courses
whose parents income does not exceed Rs. 12,000/- per annum. The scholarships
once awarded are renewable up to the degree stage of education only, provided
the candidates secure promotion to the next higher class.
Value of the Scholarship:
Degree Courses : Rs.30/- per month for 9 months in a year.
9.Award Of Anglo-Indian Scholarship:
The Scholarship under this scheme is open to European and Anglo Indians.
Value of the Scholarships:
Degree Courses : Rs.30/- per month for 9 months in a year.
10.Adhoc Merit Scholarship:
The
grant sanctioned to SC/ST including converted Christian at the rate of Rs.300/-
students studying in 1st year degree courses immediately after passing the
higher secondary with 60 percentage and above with 1st attempt is not
renewable. The adhoc merit grant will be paid to each student irrespective of
the income limit of the parents.
Award of Prize Money Scheme:
Government has instituted the Award of Prize Money Scheme to SC/ST/SC convert
students who secure 60% and above in their degree in the first attempt.

Note:-
1. The Scholarship and Fee Concession holders should be
aware of the fact as per the latest G.O that they should put in not less than
75% of the term days, and that in case it is not satisfied the scholarship will
be withheld even though the students may satisfy the other criteria. This
percentage may be relaxed in case of sudden sickness to be certified to the
satisfaction of the sanctioning authority by competent medical authorities.
2. In the event of not recording 75% attendance by the
students of Colleges, the grant of scholarships for the next year of study
shall be withdrawn. The following table provides the information of the number
of beneficiaries of the various types of scholarships for the year
2000-2001,2001-2002,2002-2003 and 2003-2004.
